Forget your preconceived notions of Michaelangelo, Rembrandt ,Vermeer or Picasso and how they lived: All day all night feaverishly making great art. First and foremost they had support from benefactors or an obedient wife or mistress. No cooking, dishes, cleaning, shopping or financial planning for them. They became great because they had others taking care of personal needs which freed them totally to create.Lucky are the few!
This is not the Artists’s life as I know it. . I make as much time as possible for work and creative thought. Sometimes I can dream and during sleep have an epiphany. I have help from my close friends from time to time with special materials on a quid pro quo basis.
As I approach the end of my 65th year I am trying to catch up with time lost and gain momentum in the Art World. I guess if I add it all up I lost forty years fitting in to the expectations placed upon women by the older generation. I began to shake off the yoke of tradition when I turned 30. It has been a long process and I raised a son on my own but I never stopped making Art.
Madeline, I’m glad you shook off the yoke… I love your work,
